Breakthrough in Green Methanol

C1 Green Chemicals AG, a Berlin-based cleantech startup, has successfully produced its first batch of methanol at its pilot plant in Leuna, Germany, according to a company press release. This achievement marks a significant milestone in sustainable chemical production and the "Leuna100" project.

The pilot plant utilizes a groundbreaking new catalysis technology that enables more efficient and environmentally friendly methanol production. This innovative approach, developed in collaboration with CreativeQuantum and the Leibniz Institute for Catalysis (LIKAT), is based on the world's first three-dimensionally scalable homogeneous catalysis.

This milestone is not only a success for C1 Green Chemicals but also marks a breakthrough for the "Leuna100" project, which is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Transport and aims to establish a sustainable methanol economy. The project's goal is to use CO₂ from industrial emissions and green hydrogen as starting materials, effectively closing the carbon cycle in methanol production.

C1 develops innovative chemical production processes by rethinking them from the atomic level to the production scale. The chemical processes are designed with the help of quantum chemical simulations and implemented as proprietary production technologies. This approach allows for more efficient and sustainable production methods.

The pilot plant's design, using commercially available industrial components, ensures easy scalability - a crucial factor in the path towards efficient mass production of green methanol. This innovation could have far-reaching implications for various industries, particularly shipping, where sustainable fuel alternatives are in high demand.

As the project progresses, C1 plans to optimize plant operation further by integrating it with a reverse water gas shift plant, aiming to achieve a completely closed carbon cycle in the production process.
