Siemens has broken ground on a landmark urban development project in Berlin, according to a company press release. The €4.5 billion Siemensstadt Square initiative aims to transform a 188-acre industrial site into a smart city prototype, leveraging technologies from the Siemens Xcelerator platform.

This ambitious project, set to be completed by 2035, will create living space for 7,000 people and generate up to 20,000 jobs. Siemens is investing €750 million, making it the company's largest single investment in Berlin to date.

At the heart of Siemensstadt Square is an end-to-end digital twin that combines campus, building, and energy levels. This comprehensive digital model will enable real-time optimization of various urban systems, from energy management to traffic flow.

Key features of the development include:

  • Europe's largest wastewater heat exchanger, providing carbon-neutral heating and cooling
  • AI-optimized biodiversity monitoring
  • Solutions for electric vehicles
  • Photovoltaic roofs on intelligent, sustainable buildings

Roland Busch, President and CEO of Siemens AG, stated, "Siemensstadt Square will be the blueprint for the city of the future." He emphasized the project's role in demonstrating how digitalization can drive sustainable growth and competitiveness.

The initiative also showcases the potential of brownfield development, offering a scalable model for urban regeneration worldwide. By integrating cutting-edge technologies with sustainable design principles, Siemensstadt Square aims to set new standards for smart city development.

As construction begins on Module 1, Siemens plans to open a showroom in July 2024, allowing visitors to experience the future of urban living firsthand. This project represents a significant step forward in reimagining urban spaces for the digital age.
